White paper: Toward sustainable performance of cloud computing
In response to the growing complexity of technologies and enterprises’ ever-increasing need to cut costs, improve their performance and transform their businesses into service chains, cloud compuing appear as a foregone solution. Nevertheless, it encompasses a number of realities that are important to clarify in order to foster better comprehension of the benefits and shadowy areas of this model.
What is cloud computing ?
“Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” This is the official definition of cloud computing provided by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is, however, a very technically-oriented definition which calls for clarification.
